the 1970's

1970
During the winter of 1970 Mission Viejo
Little League members met with Mission Viejo Company officials to find a larger, more permanent site for the City’s
Little League. The Mission Viejo Company donated land adjacent to St. Killian’s church, near the Montanoso recreation
center. Volunteer labor and financial assistance provided by the Mission Viejo Company were invaluable in getting the raw
land that was the Montanoso site ready. Hal Kemper, of Kemper construction (who graded the land for the La Paz homes) donated
his time and equipment to grade the fields. Tom Pike surveyed and laid out the fields, and John Kruezer, Jim McGann, Bill
Zahn, and Bill Bebee were among the volunteers who laid the sod and got the fields ready for the 1970 season.
The League grew again to 340 players, with 8 Major and
Minor A teams and 10 teams in Minor B. Bill Dalrymple was League President and Chuck Say was the Umpire-In-Chief. League sponsors
included La Paz Homes, Coronado Homes, Toro Disposal, and Mission Viejo Golf Club. The 1970 season consisted of a first-half
played in the month of May and a second-half played in June.
1971
A total of 28 teams and 420 boys participated during the
League’s 1971 season. In the seven-team Major Division, a “freeway series” between the first half champ
Angles and second half champion Dodgers determined the 1971 title. The Dodgers, managed by Lynn Dickson, won a close ballgame
7 to 4. The Senators won the Minor A (called AAA today) championship with a 15-9 win over the Twins. The Mavericks were the
Minor B champs. The All-Star Team competed in the Area II Tournament at Saddleback Field in El Toro against teams from Saddleback,
El Toro, and San Juan
Capistrano Little League’s.

1972 The 1972 season saw the Mission Viejo Little League grow to a total of 474 players on 37 teams in four divisions (included
Minor C, Minor B, Minor A and Majors). Dave Laughter was the League’s President and Bill Zahn was the Chief Umpire.
The Major Division Champs were the Red Sox, managed by Bob Bredeweg (see photo below). Pitcher Bobby Sommers of the Major
Dodgers threw two no-hitters during the season. Bob Wade was named All-Star Manager. The following boys were selected for
the Mission Viejo Little League All-Star Team: Jeff Brown, Bob Clark, Jim Cummings,
Greg Drum, Bill Eden, Scott Garner, Rick Kreuzer, Mark Lambert, Ivan Menchara, Mike Ochoa, Todd Richardson, Bobby Sommers,
Scott Spear, and Dave Stevenson
