League Volunteer Opportunities
South Mission Viejo Little League uses baseball as our way to support the children, families, and community of Mission Viejo. We are a completely volunteer based organization...from parents on the bleachers at practice, to Managers and Coaches on the field, to the Snack Bar, Board Members, etc. All.....VOLUNTEERS for the fabulous kids that we are here to support, grow and develop. Whatever talents or skills you have, we can use them! As a volunteer, you have the opportunity to spend quality time with your child in a safe, fun-filled environment. The benefits of volunteering in youth sport are endless. SMVLL provides all of the support and instruction you need to get started. We stand shoulder-to-shoulder with all of our volunteers. We recognize that our volunteers are the backbone of our league.
Thank you for volunteering with South Mission Viejo Little League! SMVLL is a 100% volunteer-run organization and would not be successful without the involvement of our parents and community. Volunteerism creates a positive experience by providing a high level of guidance and oversight of our players. Volunteerism is also critical to cover our league costs including leasing our fields, lighting, maintenance, equipment, uniforms, district fees and insurance. SMVLL requests that every family volunteer in some capacity for each player registered.
To protect our players, all volunteers involved with our kids are required to be background-checked. This group includes managers, coaches, team parents, umpires, snack bar and barbecue workers (adults), and any other parents at practices and games that wish to go on the field side of the fence.

SMVLL Approved Volunteer List
Here is a full list of SMVLL volunteer opportunities and requirements:
Manager - The manager is the leader of the team and is responsible for organizing practices, setting lineups, and teaching the fundamentals of baseball. Some prior knowledge of baseball is definitely helpful along with a desire to teach, learn and inspire.
All managers must submit a Manager Application to the league by December 1st every year. Managers will go through an interview process, led by the league President, Vice President, Player Agent and Division Representative. This interview process is to help the league ensure we assign the most qualified candidates to a manager position to give the players the best learning environment we can provide.
Completion and attendance of the following are required of all Manager/Coaches
-CDC Heads up Training(online)
-USA Baseball Abuse & Awareness for Adults(online)
-Heart in the Game- Sudden Cardiac Arrest Prevention Training for Youth Sports(online)
-Rules Clinic (District 68 sponsored-in peron)
-Coaches Clinic (District 68 sponsored-in person)
-Manager Meeting (League event)
-Draft (Jr.s-A division)
Coach - Coaches are responsible for assisting the manager at practices, coaching first base and third base during games, and taking over if the manager is unavailable. Two coaches per team is ideal, but more may be requested at the manager’s discretion. Visit the Coach Guidelines & Information page in the Baseball Corner for more information.

Team Parent - Team parents are the organizers for the teams. They are responsible for assisting the manager with team administration such as communication, scheduling, Shutterfly site, organizing end-of-game snacks, etc. For more information, please reach out to your team’s manager.
Scorekeeper - Each home team in the Majors, Juniors, AAA, AA and A divisions needs to provide an official game scorekeeper for each home game. The scorekeeper is responsible for keeping track of the score, the pitch count (number of pitches for a player) and other statistics as desired. Visit the Scorekeeping & Pitch Count page for more information. This position is not needed for T-Ball and Coach Pitch divisions.
Umpire – Games can’t happen without volunteer umpires, so we all need to pitch in and umpire a couple games. The volunteer umpires from District 68 cover our Major division games, but the remaining games in the AAA, AA and A divisions need volunteers from within our league. Each team is responsible to umpire a proportionate amount of games, including those in T-Ball and Coach Pitch. Visit the Umpire Resources page in the Baseball Corner for more information. And the best part - after you umpire a game, there’s a free cheeseburger and drink waiting for you at the snack bar!
Snack Shack – SMVLL helps keep league fees low by providing a Snack Shack in-season at Youth Athletic Park. Each team is required to cover several shifts during the season either by working the shifts or by hiring, which the league can facilitate.
Sponsorship – Also to keep league fees low, SMVLL requires each team in all divisions to provide at least one sponsor per team. Visit the Become an SMVLL Sponsor! page in the Sponsors section for more information.
